When it rains...it pours....

After last night's heavy rain, I started out to the barn to check on the horses this a.m. I was met at the gate by Cowboy, who sluggishly stuck his front right foot out at me. When I checked to see what was wrong, I discovered a gaping hole in the back of his front leg right above the hoof. He couldn't put any weight on his leg.

I immediately called Zak, my farrier, and met him to pick up a trailer so I could haul Cowboy into the vet.

After going through four vet clinics, Zak called a friend of his whose father is a horse vet, and we hauled Cowboy in to Waterloo.

Apparently, Cowboy had stuck his foot through the barbed-wire fence. He sliced it up pretty good, but the vet didn't think that he cut the tendon.

So the next few weeks will tell the tale. Cowboy will need antibiotics, bute, and new dressings every day for the next two weeks. Makes me wonder if this is why I'm unemployed at the moment. :-) There is always a blessing to count.

I hope Cowboy is doing better! Dang - farm life is tough. I prefer the city myself:-)
